2025/05/08 De-institutionalization of Asian Families

✶───De-institutionalization of Asian Families───✶

Delayed marriage, non-marriage, rising divorce rates, low fertility, transnational and separated families — under the forces of globalization and compressed modernity, the structure and meaning of families in Asia are undergoing rapid transformation, challenging our traditional understanding of familial norms and institutional frameworks.

This symposium brings together scholars from various disciplines to revisit the evolving forms and futures of "Asian families" through interdisciplinary, comparative, and empirical perspectives. From gender and generational shifts to migration and policy impacts, we will explore the ongoing de-institutionalization of family systems and its profound implications for intimacy, kinship, and everyday life across Asia.
